Shapes in Posters
The Circle:
The circle is the most frequently used shape within posters, it is supposedly used to entice the audience and attract a large audience. It is most commonly used in children's films and especially is used with Disney movies.
The Triangle:
The triangle is used to symbolise a strong and powerful character whether they are a protagonist/hero or antagonist/villain. The shape of the triangle and the create edges show that our character within the film will take risks and will not be afraid to. For example in the Clockwork Orange poster our protagonist is trapped within the triangle which highlights the theme of incarceration which is major in the film, the pointy shapes along with the knife shows that there will be heavy violence in the movie.
The Central Pillar:
This type of poster is normally used in typical high concept movie. It shows a character that is indeed very strong and powerful. A pillar represents a strong support and pillars normally hold up bridges and buildings. This suggests that this character is holding and supporting the world they live in and take responsibility of their civilisation.
Character Collage:
This connotes a adrenaline packed, fast paced, action packed film. The audience should be expecting a complicated plot with twists where they meet a selection of characters. This is normally used for thriller/action films.
Askew Posters:
The world in these movies is not normal. It may be crammed with action or drama but they're has to be something about his tale that is askew as in the poster. You can clearly see within some of the posters that there is something not quite right about the characters world that they live in. For example in Maniac the framing of the poster is tilted and the enigma ofseeing the protagonist face shows that there is something that’s quite askew.
The Spiral:
A spiral within the poster relates to a whirlpool, black hole etc. As an audience this signifies to us that it will be a story where the character is involuntary sucked into the world of the film and down their path that will be the story. In Alice in Wonderland we see Alice who is curious
naturally and through her curiosity is sucked down this rabbit hole which will lead her to Wonderland and lead her to obstacles she will have to over come and ultimately change from a young naive girl to a strong and brave woman.
Spacious Poster:
Spacious posters are some of the least common types of poster, it is harder for the audience to identify with it. It is most likely they do not want to give away part of the exposition in the story, or they are attracting the audiences attention to a specific aspect. It shows that this is an open and wide world and possibly that the characters travel around a lot. It leaves the audience thinking and assuming things about the film.

Buffalo 66 Movie Poster
This Buffalo 66 poster depicts the two main characters very clearly, this image has greater meaning after watching the film as you have a good understanding of their relationship and why they are positioned in such a manner. The title font is very striking and bold as it is the only source of colour in the poster, the other visuals being black and white. There is also a visible billing block, film franchise logo and institutional logos positioned at the bottom of the poster.

The silence of the lambs Movie Poster

Blue Velvet Movie Poster
The bold use of colour in this poster really catches the viewers eyes and then leads them to look closer at the characters striking faces, the Billing Block is strategically placed in front of a royal blue in order to avoid distraction from the poster itself and is more visible to read. The film title is in the centre of the poster positioned above the characters and fills a black space behind it using the same method as the Billing Block but with a reverse colour scheme. The background image is a white picket fence which is a symbolic message about the underlaying issues in "the perfect society". Suggesting that the positioning of the characters is a hint that they are the underlaying issues, and that the film may explore such things.

Flat Plan Drawing of Final Piece

Design Process:
During the design process of my film poster, I did research on different shapes, styles and conventions of a poster that falls under my Genre. I pursued research on the use of shapes in movie posters. After doing this research I came to the conclusion that I wanted to incorporate the 'Askew Poster' style to my poster, as it suggests that the world within the movie posters are not normal.
I also experimented with, 'The central pillar', as it suggests, high concepts and that there is something holding
and supporting the world they live in and take responsibility of their civilisation. I did this to foreshadow the 'dark figure' has it symbolises the characters internal evil and is what creates the surrealist aspect of the world.
I used typical film poster conventions, such as a film title, tagline, actresses, release date, a background image, a billing block, a depiction of the films themes and events, Film Franchise Logo Institutional Logos. I used Adobe Photoshop to edit my poster. I used media platforms such as youtube to research how to achieve different looks within my design, such as a fade effect on an image that layers over another image creating a dreamlike/ memory feel.
